The magazine is excellent! I am particularly interested in the article on communities of practice and the references to collaboration as a major piece of ICA strategy. I believe 2012 may be the “year of collaboration,” beginning with a strengthening of the ties among the various national ICAs, including of course ICAI.

A diversity of languages for the Wind & Waves
Larry Philbrook, ICAI president, asked a very important question in the first issue of the global ICA magazine: “How do we discover and share the learning of the ICAI community?” As he points out “This is about respect for the experience and learning we need to share, while opening ourselves up to new ideas and images now available in the world”.
I think that the ICA global magazine provides a powerful means for achieving this and for enabling the development of a truly global ICA community and network of individuals striving to live according to the values we promote.
The ICA community has grown and evolved over the last 50 years since its foundation. So the ideas and images of who we are have changed too: we are now a kaleidoscope of diverse personal and cultural identities of people around the world.

These identities are nurtured and expressed through our languages, which contain the richness and subtlety of the intricacies of our life experiences. As we become increasingly aware of this, and building on Larry’s question, I would like us to reflect on the following:
• How could the magazine
reflect the diversity of
languages within the ICA
community?
• How can we grasp the
opportunities that the
magazine provides to
promote ICA values such
as participation and giving
a voice to all, independent
of their language?
• How accessible is the
content of the magazine to
the cultural and linguistic
diversity of the ICA and
non-ICA community?
I think that the magazine could be a natural space for all to share their experiences and learning in a language they are familiar with. This would be one way of sharing the ownership of the magazine with many more people.
I would suggest that this does not mean that the “English version” of the magazine needs to be translated into the “French version” etc, or that articles written in other languages need to be translated into English. Rather, we could have a multilingual format making possible contributions from any individual whatever their linguistic heritage.
This would also present the exciting opportunity of a wider readership. Those curious about the content of an article could use a translation programme to get the key ideas, or where language permits, contact the author directly. These ideas could be improved upon and details would need to be worked out.
I would welcome an interchange of ideas, both on

the principle and the practicalities, as we create the new ideas and images of our global community.
